He received many awards while coaching that include the SD Track Coach of the Year, SD Cross-Country Coach of the Year, and he was inducted into the SD High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Throughout his teaching and coaching tenure from 1954-1996 in Tripp, Woonsocket and Watertown, "Mac" touched the lives of students and adults alike. The enthusiasm he had for young people was felt by everyone that he taught and coached. He was genuinely interested in every person and served as an excellent role model. As a basketball referee in his spare time, Jerry also touched the lives of students and adults in surrounding area towns.

"A man who truly loved kids and enjoyed coaching and teaching. Always a big smile!" A quote I remember from football practice, "This is not tough! When I played, I could fold up my helmet and put it in my back pocket!"

Here's another... Our sophomore basketball team wasn't very good. At practice, on a day while he was assigning us to run the steps in the arena (probably 100 times) Coach Mac said, "We may not be very good and may not win many games, but we will be in the best condition and have the best looking cheerleaders in the ESD conference!"

Another memory is how Jerry would tease Dale McElhany that Dale was Mac#2 and he (Jerry) would always be Mac#1.

There should be more Jerry McElroy's in the world!   Tim Kosier '66

Mike Ries Memorial Scholarship

2 awarded at $500.00 each

1 boy / 1 girl

“Where do you start when you are talking about one of the best teachers Watertown has ever had and one of the most talented individuals you have ever met?” asks former WHS basketball coach Dennis Gall in response to the recent death of longtime educator Mike Ries. “Mike was the best teacher I ever taught with,” says retired teacher Mark Bellum. “He was revered by the Mellette students and staff.”

From 1982 through 1999, hundreds of children enjoyed the magic of being a fourth grader in Mr. Ries’ classroom. His extraordinary commitment to the classroom and his unparalleled flair for engaging students helped him form unusually strong bonds with the youngsters entrusted to him. He rewarded students with jawbreakers and time in the reading loft and introduced them to silly classroom mascots. Each week he produced video newscasts for Mellette’s “K-Bear” station. Each year he drew an individual portrait of every student.

Known for his storytelling talent, his quick and irreverent wit, and his appreciation for harmless mischief, he devised nearly endless creative antics to capture students’ attention and help them remember the lessons he was delivering. One day he might demonstrate the length of human intestines by pulling fifteen feet of string out of his mouth; the next day he would have students prodding gray gelatin he had molded in the shape of a brain. He inspired several of his students to become teachers, a legacy that made him very proud.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ries taught golf to more than a generation of Watertown students. From 1985 through 1994 he was head coach of the Boys’ and the Girls’ Arrow Golf teams, and he was forever a fan of Arrow golf. In later years while golfing with friends on the local course, he often was approached by younger golfers excited to greet him and reminisce about the days when he had taught them golf.

His former classroom students still express reverence when they recall the man who brought so much humor, energy, and creativity into their lives. Susan Eide ’95 speaks for many when she says, “Mr. Ries was the best 4th grade teacher I could have imagined. He taught us to use a globe, a microscope, and our imaginations... That basement classroom in Mellette Elementary was probably one of the happiest places of my childhood... He made learning fun and encouraged each of us to develop our own ways of taking in and processing information, which was pretty innovative in the 1980s in Watertown.”

The recipient will have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and be an education major.  Preference may be given to students who have not received other scholarships. If you qualify, click the link below to apply

Napoleon "Nate" J Davis Award

$1,000.00

Awarded for the first time in 1920 and annually since then, the Davis Award is the highest recognition the faculty of Watertown High School bestows up on a graduating senior.

The Davis Award, is a high honor given to a Watertown High School graduating senior who, in the opinion of the high school faculty, exemplifies school citizenship, leadership and participation. The student will demonstrate high standards in personal living along with scholastic achievement.

The award was established in 1920 by Arnold L Davis of the class of 1890 in memory of his father, Napoleon J. Davis, who was an active member of the Watertown School Board from 1885-1910. Throughout is life, Mr. Davis maintained a sincere interest in the welfare of the children and the schools in the Watertown School District

The scholarship award had a monetary value of $150 in 2005. In response to a campaign initiated that year by the Arrow Education Foundation, former Davis Award recipients and their families and friends have made donations increasing the Arrow Education Foundation's Davis Award supplemental endowment to over $23,000!  One of the very generous contributors and past Davis Award recipient, Maynard Raasch, PhD ’33, of Wilmington, Delaware wrote, "It is my wish that this (donation) be used to match or exceed the value of other scholarships, which you state are $1,0000.00.” As a result of the campaign, Davis Award recipients now receive a $1.000.00 scholarship!

Thanks to Dr. Raasch, Mr. William Castle '38 and the many contributors, the Davis Award now has a monetary significance worthy of WHS’s highest honor.

Pete Carlson Aeronautics Scholarship

Randall & Joyce McCune Memorial Scholarship

$500.00

The Randall and Joyce McCune Intellectual Excellence Award is intended to encourage, recognize and reward demonstrated intellectual excellence during the recipient’s Secondary School years.

Randall was the principal at Watertown High School for over 20 years and was actively devoted to education in Watertown.  While one might first imagine such a career as dominated by the need to master numerous administrative and management challenges, Randall was fond of reminding students and parents that he viewed the core of his vocational calling as someone who was “a peddler of possibilities and a provider of opportunities.”  Joyce was a college graduate and obtained her Masters degree (which included studying and conducting research in Spain) before going into teaching. She took some time off from teaching to raise her children and during that time sadly realized that an increasingly serious loss of hearing prevented her from going back into the classroom.  Thankfully, her intellectual curiosity and love of learning and reading was undiminished and powerful up until the time of her passing.

Intellectual Excellence, for this award’s purpose, in any academic discipline, includes persistent traits of great curiosity and wonder coupled with intellectual rigor and discipline.  The student will exhibit the ability to suggest alternative answers and solutions previously overlooked, the ability to recombine old concepts in new and novel ways, be predictably unaccepting and questioning of the status quo without simply being a contrarian and is someone who is not necessarily concerned with every issue arriving at a logical conclusion yet derives great satisfaction in meeting the expectations of tasks set before them. This student is probably recognized as the “go to” person when circumstances or issues require a creative new approach; this student embodies qualities of leadership and is recognized as distinctly “in charge” primarily because of their intellectual competence and promise; above all, they embody that restless, eager desire to take on interesting tasks and issues as best captured by the spirit of A.E. Housman’s poem “Reveille” – Clay lies still, but bloods a rover/Breath’s a ware that will not keep/up lad: when the journey’s over/There’ll be time enough to sleep.   (Housman was one of Randall’s favorite poets and this stanza in particular was one of his favorite lines)
